As a petite person (and really anyone!), I feel like there are often a lot of “rules” we are supposed to follow when it comes to what to wear. I “shouldn’t” wear midi skirts or flats with ankle straps because they’ll make me look even shorter. But hey guess what!? I’m wearing BOTH of them in this outfit and I love it!
As my style has evolved over the years so has my opinion on the fact that I need to stick to certain silhouettes that flatter my body type. I am an exceptionally short person (only 4’9″) so it seems a bit ridiculous to think a midi dress is going to make me look even shorter. Hello – I am already short! The clothes I wear isn’t going to change that. And why not wear something that makes me feel good while I’m at it?
I can understand, perhaps, finding a midi dress that isn’t quite so much fabric as that might overwhelm my frame but magazines/websites/etc telling me I shouldn’t wear an entire kind of clothing because of my size? I’ll pass. But it’s also taken me a very long to get to this point. And I’m also not wearing every type of clothing that I’m not “supposed” to. Just the kinds that I think are cute/comfortable/my style/etc. And really, the most important thing is if I think it looks good on myself and if I feel good in it.
I’ve mentioned it before but this summer was where my midi dress/skirt obsession really started to take shape. They’re perfect because you don’t have to worry about it blowing up in the wind or sitting on a cold/hot bench! I recently thrifted this dress (surprise, surprise!) but it has become my absolute favorite for the cooler weather. It’s flowy so it’s comfortable, it’s the perfect autumn shade (mustard yellow!) and it’s got a floral pattern. What more could you want in a dress? Plus, it’s got that cute vintage feel to it.
If you’re following me on Instagram (hint: you should be!) you will have seen me feature my shoes a few weeks ago. They’re originally from Payless, which is sadly going out of business in my city it seems. And these are the kinds of shoes that could make me look shorter because the cut off my ankles. But they are so comfortable and cute so I’m going to keep wearing them.
So, I guess the point of this post is to tell you to wear whatever you like as long as you feel good in it and you like wearing it!!
Dress: Thrifted | Shoes: Payless (old) | Jacket: Thrifted | Belt: ASOS
Do you wear clothes you technically “shouldn’t?”
